Big Improvements Compared to the Universal Version

I have the Universal bluray that's like ten years old. It looks positively bad, but it's all I had ever known until I got this Arrow 4K remaster, which offers several big improvements. The resolution is obviously much improved. You can make out background details that just look like a blurry mess on the old disk. (Random example: In the mall scene, Gary pulls up to the curb from section 21 of the parking lot -- not a pertinent detail but one that's impossible to discern on the old disk.) Regarding color, everything POPS, maybe too vividly in some cases. I had this debate with friends who watched it with me. I think skin tones are a bit warm but the color schemes are so varied and extreme in this movie that no one else seemed to notice or care. It looks fantastic. One quick remark on the relatively heavy grain throughout the film. Personally I can't stand 4K disks that scrub the images so aggressively to remove all the grain and wind up making faces look almost cartoonish. I really appreciate that Arrow doesn't take this approach. I've watched a few 4K disks they've produced now and, in each case, the transfer offers significant visual benefits while still looking authentic and natural. That's important for the nostalgic effect of a movie like Weird Science for sure. The surround mix absolutely bangs. Watch this with friends and movie night will very quickly turn into a dance party. Also, RIP Bill Paxton.
